What Is Linux
Linux is an operating system for your computer , IN A SIMILAR WAY AS IS ALSO THE APPLE OSX Microsoft Windows operating system for your computer . LINUX IS STILL VERY DIFFERENT .
Linux was launched in 1992 by then at that time a university student Linus Torvalds name , which released its free software , including full source code . Because Linus put his source code fully available , thousands of software developers worldwide downloaded it , makes changes and improvements sent back to him !
Because of this effort for global cooperation , Linux is stable , flexible and extremely well supported . An operating system is the fastest growing in the world and is available free of charge for you to install it on your computer ! Yes sounds good ? Even as it is !
Linux comes with thousands of free applications , which are maintained by thousands of volunteers around the world . These projects also release their source code , which means that they are also " open source " .
" But how can they do all this for free ? " , Ask yourself . Communities Linux and open source make this free software because they love , not because they want to make money from them . They do it for the prestige , honor and because they believe in the ideals of open source .
It is important to note that due to the nature of open source software ( ability to adapt to them will spirit ) there are many versions of Linux . This is very good because you can find a version that suits you best you ! These different versions of Linux called " allocation " . This is because the creators of different versions of Linux take and make their changes to it, add packages and distribute them free of charge . It may sound a bit complicated , but it is not .
Software that you may already be using
Did you know that you could be using the free software and open up not knowing this at all ? Open source applications are not just for Linux , but operate in a number of different operating systems including Windows and OSX .
Here is a list of software applications and products that use open source technology that you may already be using :
● Mozilla Firefox
● Mozilla Thunderbird
● Openoffice.org
● 7 - zip
Why should I slip on Linux ?
● viruses and spyware
● security and stability
● management packages
● features
● compatibility
● free ( as in freedom / not as in price )
● Easy and intuitive
● choice and control
● community
● fun !
What about my data ?
One of the main obstacles when switching from closed source software is compatibility . Companies often create their formats with closed source and make virtually impossible for anyone to know how they work their formats . Despite this , Linux is compatible with almost all data formats that exist and generally has a free program available that will read your data . For example , Microsoft Office documents are supported in the package OpenOffice.org and Adobe Photoshop files are backed up in Gimp .
Linux supports and encourages the use of files with open source format . Currently most of the documents are generated by Microsoft Office , however these formats are closed source and proprietary . Using these formats before you place the whims of Microsoft who can ( and does) make its file formats incompatible with other applications , including older versions of Microsoft Office !
The fact that these files are closed source , people are forced to buy new versions of Microsoft Office . While packages for open source office can read and write Microsoft formats , sometimes the results are not perfect because we have not seen the code to operate formats . Linux still does a great job with Microsoft Office files and of course you will understand that I could use and change them from one to another without any problem .
